Why Reflection is the Smartest Move in Legal Tech Strategy
This quote from Confucius opens my new book, Beyond the Features, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. In a legal tech landscape where trends move fast and buzzwords dominate conversations, it’s a timely reminder that smart decisions aren’t made in isolation. They’re grounded in context. In experience. And most importantly, in reflection.
I’ve spent nearly 30 years working with legal technology – consulting, implementing, troubleshooting, and learning. One thing that’s become very clear to me is this: the firms that take the time to look back are the ones that move forward with the most confidence.
The temptation to chase what’s next
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of a new tool or platform. There’s always something shiny on the horizon – AI-powered insights, smart automation, cloud-based everything. I’ve seen firms rush into solutions that sounded transformative, only to find that they didn’t align with their actual needs, culture, or infrastructure.
I’ve been there too – watching good intentions unravel because no one paused to ask the most important question: “What have we already learned?”
Why the past matters
Beyond the Features isn’t about clinging to the old ways. It’s about learning from them. Reflecting on what’s worked and what hasn’t is one of the most overlooked, yet powerful, steps in building a tech strategy that’s future-ready.
In the book, I encourage firms to dig into their own history:
Which past implementations delivered real value?
Where did we miss the mark?
What tools were quickly abandoned – and why?
What feedback did we hear, but not act on?
These aren’t just technical questions – they’re strategic ones.
Hindsight isn’t a weakness. It’s a resource.
Too often, reflection is treated as optional. Something we do after the fact. But when you make it part of your decision-making process from the outset, everything changes. You avoid old mistakes. You build with confidence. And you create an environment where innovation is thoughtful, not reactive.
Beyond the Features is full of practical ways to turn hindsight into strategy – because I believe that’s where the real difference lies.

💡 When was the last time you reviewed a past tech decision with fresh eyes? Are your future choices informed by your experience – or are you building blindfolded?
