Price vs. Value: The Legal Tech Equation That Actually Matters

A professional header image with a green overlay shows a businessman in a navy three-piece suit seated at a desk in a modern office. In the foreground, a brass balance scale holds a thick stack of cash on the left and a black block labeled “VALUE” on the right. The BlindSpot Solutions logo is positioned in the upper right corner.
“Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.” – Warren Buffett

This quote is a favourite in investment circles, but it’s just as relevant when evaluating legal technology.

In Chapter Seven of Beyond the Features, I explore a common trap law firms fall into: confusing cost with value.

In the legal tech space, it’s easy to be swayed by polished demos and “limited-time” pricing. But the real cost of any platform isn’t what you pay upfront — it’s what it delivers (or fails to deliver) over time.

The TCO Blind Spot

Many firms underestimate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). It’s not just about licence fees. Hidden costs often emerge long after contracts are signed, including:

  • Implementation – How long will it take? Who’s doing the heavy lifting?

  • Training and adoption – Will your people actually use it, or resort to workarounds?

  • Support and upgrades – Is the vendor committed for the long haul, or just until go-live?

  • Future fit – Will the solution scale and flex as your firm grows?

A low-cost solution that frustrates users, creates inefficiencies, or requires early replacement is no bargain. It’s a drain on productivity, morale, and budget.

Ask the Right Questions

Instead of simply asking, “How much does it cost?”, ask:

  • Will this reduce friction in our workflows?

  • Will it empower our people or burden them?

  • Does this align with our long-term goals and capabilities?

  • What’s the exit cost if it fails to deliver?

Value Is Strategic

Value isn’t just about features — it’s about impact. The right legal tech solution won’t just perform tasks; it will move your firm forward.

That might mean faster onboarding, better compliance, clearer insights, or enabling your professionals to focus on high-value work.

So yes, price matters. But value matters more.
